Gunnar Carlson: "Algebraic Topology and High Dimensional Data"
September 11, 2006 All Day
Parent Program: --
Description Location: 60 Evans Hall at UCB
Time: 4:10pm

Algebraic Topology can be used as a tool for the qualitative analysis of high dimensional data. Applications require the development of techniques which permit the estimation of homology in situations where one is onlky given a finite set of points (a "point cloud") sampled from an underlying space. We will discuss these methods and describe at least one example, from natural image statistics.

Talk followed by refreshments (e.g. pizza and beer) at a nearby establishment.
