Dr. SYDNEY BRENNER, a Nobel Laureate in Medicine (2002), is a Senior Distinguished Fellow of the Crick-Jacobs Center at the Salk Institute. Dr. Brenner is a pioneer in genetics and molecular biology whose work established the existence of messenger RNA and demonstrated how the order of amino acids in proteins is determined. His recent studies are leading to a new understanding of the evolution of vertebrates and has resulted in new ways of analyzing gene sequences. He also conducted pioneering work with the roundworm, a model organism now widely used to study genetics. His research with Caenorhabditis elegans garnered insights into aging, nerve cell function and controlled cell death, or apoptosis.
MSRI is located at 17 Gauss Way, Berkeley, which is off Centennial Drive and near Grizzly Peak Blvd.

Public Transportation: On weekdays the H-line Bus -- with stops on the UCB campus -- arrives at MSRI / SSL at 1:51 PM as well as 1:21 PM. Departure from MSRI / SSL is at 3:25 PM and 3:55 PM, stopping on the UCB campus and downtown Berkeley BART. For the complete schedule, please see:

Parking: Parking in the Institute's terraced hillside lot (directly off Centennial Drive) requires a Parking Permit, which will be available and posted at the stairway leading up (95+ steps) to the MSRI building. Disabled parking spaces are located at the entrance to MSRI's Chern Hall that is reached from Centennial Drive by turning onto the "Gauss Way" access road that leads to MSRI / SSL.
