Celebrating 25 Years: It's MSRI Day! January 26, 2008 All Day

Description The 25th Anniversary of the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute was recognized with a Proclamation from the Mayor of Berkeley, Tom Bates, declaring Saturday, January 26, 2008 as MSRI Day in the City of Berkeley. Letters of congratulations were received in honor of the celebration from Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Senator Dianne Feinstein, and Congresswoman Barbara Lee. MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES RESEARCH INSTITUTE DAY

WHEREAS, the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI) is dedicated to the advancement and communication of fundamental knowledge in mathematics, to the development of human resources and capital for the growth and use of such knowledge, and to the cultivation in the larger society of awareness and appreciation of the beauty, power and importance of mathematical ideas that brings greater understanding of the world; and

WHEREAS, the City of Berkeley is strongly committed to the support of science, mathematics, and education that can foster a vibrant intellectual community, a scientifically literate citizenry, a competitive workforce, and robust economic growth; and

WHEREAS, MSRI is one of the world’s premiere centers for research in the mathematical sciences, and has been advancing mathematics through workshops and programs that bring over 1,700 mathematicians annually to the Institute; and

WHEREAS, MSRI has a longstanding tradition of presenting math-related special events and concerts for the Berkeley community—as well as throughout the greater Bay Area—most of which are free, and are engaging and enjoyed by audiences of all ages; and in recognition of the support the Institute provides to middle-school and high-school students in Berkeley and throughout the Bay Area by sponsoring math circles for students and their teachers; and

WHEREAS, this year, on Saturday, January 26th, 2008 the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute is celebrating its 25th Anniversary since its founding as an independent Institute.

NOW, THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED THAT I, TOM BATES, Mayor of the City of Berkeley,
do hereby proudly proclaim January 26, 2008 as

MATHEMATICAL SCIENCES RESEARCH INSTITUTE DAY

in the City of Berkeley.
