Free Public Event: Film Premiere of "Julia Robinson and Hilbert's Tenth Problem" April 30, 2008 All Day
Parent Program: --
Description MSRI and the UCB Math Department present the Northern California premiere of Julia Robinson and Hilbert's Tenth Problem on Wednesday, April 30 from 7:00 pm to 9:00pm in the Chan Shun Auditorium, Room 2050 in the Valley Life Sciences Building at UC Berkeley. The story of Julia Robinson's rise to prominence in a field where she was often the only woman traces her passionate pursuit of Hilbert's tenth problem against a background of mathematical ideas and a history-making solution.

The screening of the one-hour biographical documentary will be followed by a panel discussion, moderated by Alan Weinstein (Chair, UCB Math Dept.), between filmmaker George Csicsery, Constance Reid (sister and biographer of Julia Robinson), UCB Prof. Bjorn Poonen, whose work in modern number theory and algebraic geometry extends the legacy of Hilbert's 10th problem, and two mathematicians who knew Julia, Martin Davis and Dana Scott. FREE ADMISSION.

The Valley Life Sciences Building (VLSB) is near UCB's West Entrance, a few blocks from the downtown Berkeley BART station. Public metered parking is available at the corner of Addison and Oxford Streets. See a map of the UCB campus showing the Valley Life Sciences building location at: UC Berkeley map
