Tony DeRose, Pixar Animation Studios: Math in the Movies

The Mathematical Sciences Research Institute and Berkeley City College cordially invite you to attend a free special event on the topic of “Math in the Movies," presented by Tony DeRose of Pixar Animation Studios.  This is the first of six lectures in the series Not on the Test: The Pleasures and Uses of Mathematics.  This series is dedicated to engaging the public in mathematics through accessible, enthusiastic lectures presented by respected, dynamic speakers.  For the complete series schedule, please scroll down.

Tony DeRose will illustrate the extraordinary contribution of mathematics to animated films.  Filmmaking is undergoing a digital revolution brought on by advances in areas such as computer technology, computational physics, geometry, and approximation theory.  Using numerous clips drawn from Pixar's feature films, DeRose will provide a behind-the-scenes look at the role that math plays in the revolution.  A question and answer period will follow the lecture.

Tony DeRose is a Senior Scientist and leader of the Research Group at Pixar Animation Studios. He received a BS in Physics from the University of California, Davis, and a PhD in Computer Science from the University of California, Berkeley.  From 1986 to 1995 Dr. DeRose was a Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at the University of Washington.  In 1998, he was a major contributor to the Oscar-winning short film Geri's game, in 1999 he received the ACM SIGGRAPH Computer Graphics Achievement Award, and in 2006 he received a Scientific and Technical Academy Award for his work on surface representations.
