About Theodora Martin
Theodora Serbanescu-Martin is a senior at UC Berkeley majoring in Music and English and minoring in German. She studies piano with Martha Wasley, and her past teachers include Hans Boepple and Carmen Enescu.
Theodora has attended numerous summer festivals throughout Europe such as the International Piano Academy in Freiburg, Germany and the Dublin International Festival in Ireland, and took master classes with world-renowned professors including John O’Connor, Vladimir Ovchinnikov, Seymour Lipkin, Katarzyna Popowa-Zydron and Malcolm Bilson.
She has performed standard and non-standard concertos, including Brahms’s Second, Prokofiev’s Second, and Scharwenka’s Fourth, with several orchestra in Russia, Poland and the U.S. Her awards include first prize in the MTAC, Marilyn Mindell, AFAF, International Russian Music, and Young Pianists’ Beethoven competitions, as well as the Mary Nuñes Souza Prize from UC Berkeley.
Theodora is a member of the UCBSO, frequently performs chamber music, and studies the fortepiano equally alongside modern piano performance.
Theodora has attended the 2nd Rubin Institute for Music Criticism and is also a music reviewer for Peninsulareviews.com.
She is currently working on her music honors thesis, which focuses on Brahms’s use of the grazioso style and the politics of friendship in fin-de-siècle Vienna, and on her English honors thesis, which traces tropes of performance and self-conscious theatricality in the poetry of Thomas Wyatt and his contemporaries.
