Harmonic Series: MSRI's 2016-17 Concert Series presents

A native of San Francisco, Torbie Phillips has been enamored with singing and listening to music since she was very young. Her parents' collection of LPs, though not extensive, offered her a wide range of artists, from Bach to Brubeck, from Debussy to Duke, from Tchaikovsky to Tjader, from Stravinsky to Satchmo. Early interest in musical theater brought her onstage for a solo performance of a Jule Styne number from "Peter Pan" at age 8 and for numerous (but minor) singing roles as a young girl, but it wasn't until her adult years (after a brief foray into the world of opera singing) that she developed her fervor for vocal jazz. A former student at the San Francisco Conservatory of Music (with Faith Winthrop), the Blue Bear School of Music (with Raz Kennedy and Sharman Duran), the Jazz School (with Brenda Boykin and Stephanie Bruce), the University of California Berkeley/San Francisco (with Billy Philadelphia), and the Stanford Jazz Workshop (with Madeline Eastman), Torbie currently performs regularly at a variety of San Francisco Bay Area nightclubs.

Jason Martineau (piano) is an award-winning composer, pianist, arranger, and instructor, and has been active in the San Francisco Bay Area since 1995. He is a graduate of the University of South Florida, the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, and Manhattan School of Music, and has composed numerous works for orchestra, chamber ensembles, solo piano, and chorus, as well as a full-length musical, multiple film scores, and over 200 songs, both instrumental and vocal. Dr. Martineau has recorded more than ten CDs in various genres, and has also been featured on numerous other artists' recordings, as pianist, music director, and producer. 

Jeff Denson (bass) is a professor at the California Jazz Conservatory in Berkeley, California and the Director of its Outreach Program designed to develop the Bay Area’s most talented musicians while making the local scene a productive and fertile environment for jazz. Jeff composes for and leads three distinct ensembles, participating in a few cooperative groups and working on his three-act Chamber Opera, WEBS. He has recorded 11 albums as leader/co-leader and over a dozen more as a featured sideman. Over the past 15 years, he has shared the bandstand with an impressive and diverse array of remarkable musicians including Anthony Davis, Mark Dresser, Joe Lovano, Jane Ira Bloom, Kenny Werner, Dave Douglas, Bob Moses, Giacomo Gates, Howard Alden and many more. In 1999, Jeff began his studies at the renowned Berklee College of Music, and later followed with his Master of Music in Jazz Studies from Florida State University and his Doctorate of Musical Arts in Contemporary Music Performance with an emphasis on Composition from the University of California, San Diego in 2010.

Kelly Park (drums) studied at the Berklee College of Music while working as a professional musician, performing and recording with the likes of Michael Gibbs, Phil Wilson, and Randy Sabien. Kelly has performed with Thad Jones, Keely Smith, Zakiya Hooker, Michael Manring, Kim Nalley among many others. He’s traveled the country to be Musical Director for singers such as Shawn Ryan and Russ Lorenson, and also is the House Musical Director for the The Rrazz Room, the premiere nightclub of San Francisco.  Kelly’s performances have taken him all over the United States, as well as in Denmark, Sweden, Germany, Mexico, Tunisia, Canada, and England.
