Developing Math Joy & Identity Through Literature

Come dive into some children’s books that will make you think about math in a whole new way! Join the fun, as you become a “student for a day” and immerse yourself in a wide range of read-alouds and hands-on activities.

Learn by doing in this interactive playshop for early math and early literacy advocates. No math experience required!
We will explore books from the Mathical Book Prize list — and beyond — in the company of authors, educators and early childhood experts. Mathical aims to inspire children of all backgrounds, ages and interests to develop a love and appreciation of the math in the world around them.
Come prepared for storytime — and enjoy being introduced to diverse activities and resources through demos, show and tell, and other “seed planting” strategies. You can return later at your leisure and explore more deeply with the expansive resource list we will provide.

About the Campaign for Grade Level Reading
The Campaign for Grade Level Reading is a collaborative effort by foundations, nonprofit partners, business leaders, government agencies, states and communities across the nation to ensure that more children in low-income families succeed in school and graduate prepared for college, a career, and active citizenship. The Campaign focuses on an important predictor of school success and high school graduation—grade-level reading by the end of third grade. Learn more at gradelevelreading.net.
About the Mathical Book Prize
The Mathical Book Prize is an annual award for fiction and nonfiction books that inspire children of all ages to see math in the world around them. Mathical recognizes math-inspiring literature for kids ages 2-18. Prize-winning books are selected by a committee of teachers, librarians, mathematicians, and others. Each year’s selections join a growing list of stories ranging from picture books and graphic novels to chapter books and young adult literature.
The Mathical Book Prize is awarded by the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute (MSRI), in cooperation with the Institute for Advanced Study (IAS). The award is presented in partnership with the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM), and in coordination with the Children’s Book Council (CBC).
