We will introduce a semi-combinatorial language dealing with k-dimensional polyhedra and with divisors on an (n-k)-dimensional quasiprojective variety Y to describe k-dimensional torus actions on an n-dimensional, normal, affine variety X. Moreover, we show how this language reflects the orbit stratification as well as torus invariant Weil and Cartier divisors in X. This situation arises naturally in the deformation theory of toric varieties.
