I will introduce three different notions of tropical rank for symmetric matrices, based on minimal decompositions into rank 1
symmetric matrices, star tree matrices, and tree matrices, respectively. I will present the basic properties of each of these
notions. Since each notion of rank corresponds to membership in a tropical secant set, our work amounts to a close study of the tropical secant sets of certain nice tropical varieties.
