This will be a series of lectures over the course of the program outlining the proof of Kronheimer and myself that Khovanov homology detects the unknot. The main tool that is used is a version of Floer homology which uses connections with prescribed singularities along the knot. This first two talks will explain in some detail the construction of instanton Floer homology and its generalization to connections with singularities. I will try to build things up from scratch as much as possible so the talks should be accessible to graduate students.
