The property or Rapid Decay is a a property of the convolution operator on the L_2 space of a finitely generated group. Valette had conjectured that all cocompact lattices in the isometry group of symmetric spaces had property RD but progress in higher ranks seems a bit limited. I will describe a different approach to the problem (via a representation on the Furstenberg boundary) that may circumvent the issues with existing approaches.
