Abstract/Media

The talk will describe the classical transportation problem and the Brenier map which solves it for the most natural cost function. This map has applications in PDE, harmonic analysis, geometry and probability theory. I will explain a very elementary construction of the map and illustrate why it is so useful with an example of a deviation inequality relating transportation cost and entropy.
