Abstract/Media

In the talk I will try to explain in non-technical terms a deep and beautiful relation between the theorem of Briancon-Skoda and the monodromy of an isolated hypersurface singularity {f=0} that was discovered by John Scherk about 30 years ago. A proof of this relation involves the theory of mixed Hodge structures on the vanishing cohomology, but can be understood on an intuitive level.
