Abstract/Media

The singularity theorems of Hawking, Penrose, and others predict that gravitational collapse results in spacetime singularities.

However, these theorems tell us very little about the nature of these singularities.  We can learn more by performing computer simulations of gravitational collapse and looking at the properties of the singularities that result.  The simulations can also give hints about what theorems might be proved about singularities.  This talk will review what has been learned from simulations and speculate about the prospects for future simulations and mathematical results.
