Abstract/Media

For thirty or more years, the chromatic view has been the dominant framework for organizing the search for large scale phenomena in stable homotopy theory. Despite the widespread success of this approach, the details of calculations at chromatic level two have a reputation of being impenetrable, especially at small primes. I hope to convince you otherwise: given a few basic (if deep) facts, the end results are inevitable.
