In this talk I will elaborate on some topics that were touched on in Tian's talk on February 1st. Specifically I'll discuss "(semi)stable pairs" , resultants and discriminants of projective varieties then indicate a proof of the following Theorem:

A linearly normal algebraic manifold X  is stable if and only if the Mabuchi energy restricted to the Bergman metrics is proper in the sense defined by Tian in 1997.
