Abstract/Media

Bestvina and Brady associated a group to each finite flag complex, as the kernel of a map from a right-angled Artin group to the infinite cyclic group.  Using branched covers to make new CAT(0) cube complexes I associate an uncountable family of groups to each connected finite flag complex.  I shall outline the construction, its properties and two results obtained this semester: the classification of subgroups of almost finitely presented groups and the existence of uncountably many quasi-isometry classes of groups of type FP (the latter joint with Robert Kropholler and Ignat Soroko).
