The title makes clear that this an introductory talk to the main one. What I will do is to, keeping things pretty elementary, discuss a few concepts needed in the main talk (e.g. geodesic currents) and will give a proof of a simplified version of Mirzakhani's theorem about counting simple curves in hyperbolic surfaces.
