Many problems in analytic number theory can be reduced to the problem of measuring cancellation among sums of Kloosterman sums. In this colloquium-style talk, I will give a brief overview of what is currently known in the classical case of integral weight, including Kuznetsov's groundbreaking result from 1980 and recent progress of Sarnak and Tsimerman. I will then present a result, joint with Ahlgren, in which we treat the half-integral weight case, and I will give an application to the classical partition function.
