In preparation for my talk in the Modern Techniques and Methods Workshop, I will cover some basic notions about sums of squares and semidefinite programming. I will also discuss the symmetry-reduction technique of Gatermann and Parrilo that relies on representation theory to simplify the computations involved in finding a sum of squares representation of a polynomial that is invariant under the action of a finite group.
