We say that a lattice polytope is spanning if its set of lattice points affinely spans the whole lattice over the integers. I will explain the classification of non-spanning polytopes in dimension 3 and the result that all but exactly two spanning polytopes contain a unimodular tetrahedron. I will try to make the talk accessible to all audiences and there will be plenty of pictures to illustrate the concepts.
