The splitting ring of a monic polynomial is a ring-theoretic analogue of a splitting field which was classically seen used in the construction of Chern classes of vector bundles. I will discuss a few properties of splitting rings and explain how they are connected to syzygies of determinantal varieties and the coherent cohomology of supergrassmannians. This is joint work with Andrew Snowden.
