This is an expository talk, mainly based on Corlette’s celebrated article “Flat G bundles with canonical metrics” (1988). The main result of the paper is that a flat stable bundle admits a unique harmonic metric. We will spend considerable time unpacking the statement of the theorem and motivating it, and then try to give some ideas of the proof. If time permits I will discuss some of the many repercussions of this result.
