In this first talk of a series of three, we discuss the motivation behind Sharifi's conjecture, which connects the geometric theory of GL2 (modular symbols) with the arithmetic theory of GL1 (cup products). We define a map between those objects and introduce Beilinson--Kato's elements, which play a crucial role in the picture. In particular, we discuss how to understand Sharifi's map as an application corresponding to specializing at infinity the Beilinson--Kato classes.
