If I is a grade 3 perfect ideal in S and F is a (minimal length) resolution of S/I, then a resolution F' for any directly linked ideal can be explicitly described using a dg-algebra structure on F. To understand ideals two links away from I, we would want an explicit dg-algebra structure on F', which Avramov, Kustin, and Miller traced back to additional structure on the original resolution F. We show how the higher structure maps arising from R_gen systematically extend this idea, and that their transformation under linkage is particularly elegant. We characterize and classify grade 3 licci ideals using this perspective, and deduce some consequences for the theory of generic free resolutions.
