Today only the uninformed and/or foolish would believe that the Haagerup subfactor is exotic. But it does seem to be perhaps the simplest subfactor not directly connected to classical math (Lie theory, finite groups,...). One of Vaughan's questions was: does physics know about it? After all, quantum field theory and string theory/CFT should surely not be constrained by classical math. More specifically, does there exist a VOA whose representation theory is given by the centre of the Haagerup? Physics has provided some evidence that it exists. I will present some answers.
