The universal A1-invariant quotient of a variety X can be described as the colimit of the sheaves S^n(X), where S(X) denotes the sheaf of naive A1-connected components of X. This construction has proved to be an important tool for computing the sheaf of A1-connected components of X. We first discuss known results and examples in which the sequence of iterates S^n(X) stabilizes after finitely many steps. We then show that, in general, the infinite iterations in this construction is genuinely necessary.
