AMSI-MATRIX Winter School is an annual two-week event designed for postgraduate students, early-career researchers and industry professionals in the mathematical sciences and related disciplines.
Delve into the latest research and trends with national and international experts under the 2025 theme of Mathematics for Action: Supporting Decision-Making for a Better Future. The program includes social events, specialist guest lectures, participants talks and a careers session to promote networking and collaboration. For the first time, AMSI has partnered with The University of Newcastle to lead the academic program and MATRIX to host the Winter School in Creswick, Victoria from 1-12 September.
Applicants are strongly encouraged to attend in person to benefit from the networking and collaboration aspects, however, can opt to join online. Please note not all elements of the program will be available remotely, and some online functions are limited.
This program focuses on mathematical and computational approaches for optimization and decision-making in real-world sustainability challenges. It explores applying mathematical models, algorithms, and machine learning to healthcare, logistics, urban mobility, and resource management, aligning with UN Sustainable Development Goals.
The school covers advanced topics in optimization theory, machine learning, and operations research, with hands-on workshops led by prominent researchers. It emphasizes interdisciplinary applications of mathematics and computational methods to address pressing issues like climate change, healthcare access, and urban congestion.
It is expected that participants will have sufficient basic background in statistics, linear algebra, differential equations, optimisation and coding to be able to successfully participate in all aspects of the Winter School. As higher degree students in the mathematical sciences, it is likely they will have all the necessary background from their undergraduate studies. Applicants should address their level of knowledge and preparedness in the application.
