Schedule now available. ANNOUNCEMENT: Arlie O. Petters Receives First Blackwell-Tapia Prize Following up on the success of a conference held by Cornell University 7-8 May 2000 in honor of David H. Blackwell and Richard A. Tapia, MSRI and Cornell have established a prize in honor of these two distinguished mathematical scientists who have been inspirations to more than a generation of African American and Hispanic American students and professionals in the mathematical sciences. The prize will be awarded every second year to a mathematical scientist who has contributed significantly to his or her field of expertise, and who has served as a role model for mathematical scientists and students from under-represented minority groups or contributed in other significant ways to the addressing of the problem of the under-representation of minorities in mathematics. The first award will be presented at a conference to be held November 1 and 2 at MSRI, sponsored by MSRI and Cornell, with additional funding from the Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics. This conference will feature lectures by the prize recipient and other distinguished mathematicians, as well as poster sessions for the presentation of work by conference participants from all areas of the mathematical sciences. Poster presentations by graduate students are particularly encouraged. The conference will kick off with a banquet and public talk on the evening of Friday, November 1, with a full day of activities on Saturday, November 2. A registration fee of $85 ($20 for students) will include the cost of the banquet, lunch Saturday, and a reception Saturday evening to close the conference. Registration: Please register on-line, and remit the conference registration fee ($85 for nonstudents, $20 for students) to the address below. Registration forms can also be printed and mailed to the address given below, with the registration fee enclosed. Poster Sessions: Faculty, students, and all other participants are encouraged to share their work from all areas of the mathematical sciences at two poster sessions on Saturday, November 2. Proposals for poster presentations should be sent to Bob Megginson, and should include a title, a brief abstract, and the primary Mathematics Subject Classification for the material. Other lodging may be available in the area, but reservations should be made early since hotels in the Berkeley area tend to book up early. In particular, the two faculty clubs mentioned on our lodging page tend to sell out months in advance.
