Abstract:

We introduce an axiomatic setting where conjectures about “unlikely intersections” make sense, in the spirit of Zilber's trichotomy.  We will review several typical examples where such situations occur - tori, abelian varieties, Shimura varieties, more generally mixed Shimura varieties. In the talk the following week, Laura Capuano will treat in detail the case of abelian schemes and the relative Manin-Mumford problem.
