Some limitations of reduction mod p methods
Reduction mod p methods enable us to translate a problem in characteristic zero to one in positive characteristic. However, they do not always work effectively. In this talk, I will discuss two specific problems. The first problem is local, concerning which characteristic zero singularities descend to pure subrings. The second problem is global, concerning the geometric characterization of varieties of globally F-regular type, i.e., projective varieties whose mod p reductions have F-regular homogeneous coordinate rings for almost all p. The first part of this talk is based on joint work with Tatsuki Yamaguchi, and the latter part is an ongoing project with Paolo Cascini.
