Description
Location and Topics This workshop is to be held at the Salt Palace Convention Center located at 100 S. West Temple, Salt Lake City, Utah, directly preceding the Annual Meeting of SACNAS, the Society for Advancement of Chicanos and Native Americans in Science. http://www.sacnas.org/confNew/confClient/ This is the first workshop sponsored by all the US-based Math Institutes and seventh in a series sponsored by the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute on contemporary research in mathematics. Each institute will focus on their upcoming programs for the academic year 2009 – 2010. All presentations will be expository, intended for mathematical scientists and students not necessarily working in these areas, but interested in learning about new developments and the possibility of spending some time at any of the participating math institutes. We anticipate an audience composed of graduate students, post docs, and mid career faculty. There will be a separate program aimed at undergraduates on Thursday, October 9, 2009. For more information, please click here. Discussions about the institute programs will include lectures which will target a broad audience of mathematical scientists including graduate students, post docs, and mid career faculty, as well as advice about the different ways one can be involved in the upcoming programs. A panel composed of a representative from each US-based Math Institute will occur on Thursday, October 9. SACNAS members are strongly encouraged to take part in this workshop; and conversely, we anticipate that many workshop participants will remain for the annual meeting. Registration and Funding Funding for travel and lodging is available for mathematicians at all stages of their career. This includes graduate students, post docs and mid career faculty. We are particularly interested in funding women and those from underrepresented minority groups. Undergraduates are encouraged to participate in the Mathematics Mini course. You can find information about the Minicourse and funding for this here. For those of you who wish to stay only for the 2-day Modern Math workshop advertised on this web page, and do not need support, please register here. If you would like to apply for support, please register on-line at this web site, click “Funding Support Needed”, fill in your contact information, the section on why you would like to attend this workshop, and information about your academic background. The organizers will contact you with their funding decision. Please do not register at the SACNAS website, as the Modern Math workshop is really a pre-conference to SACNAS. For those of you who wish to participate in the Modern Math workshop and stay for the SACNAS conference that follows, please register on-line at this web site, click “Funding Support Needed”, fill in your contact information, the section on why you would like to attend this workshop, the fact that you would like to stay for the SACNAS workshop, and information about your academic background. The organizers will contact you with their funding decision, which will include more instructions appropriate to the SACNAS part. For information on the SACNAS meeting go to www.sacnas.org .
