Discrepancy theory, which deals with approximating continuous objects by discrete ones, has its roots in the uniform distribution theory pioneered by Weyl and is closely connected to approximation theory, probability, combinatorial geometry, number theory etc, while many important quantitative bounds rely on methods of functional and harmonic analysis. I shall give a (rather eclectic) survey of some of the classical and recent results and problems in the theory.
