Abstract:

I'll describe some simple new tools for studying the influence of scalar curvature on the geometry and topology of 3-manifolds, via the fibers of harmonic maps to S^1 (and related pdes). I'll emphasize applications to the relationship between the Thurston norm and harmonic norm on cohomology, and briefly touch on connections with general relativity.
