Groups Acting Properly On The Affine Space
To participate in this seminar, please register here: https://www.msri.org/seminars/25205
Abstract: Conjecturally, groups acting properly and cocompactly on the affine space should not contain free groups: this is known as the Auslander conjecture.
I will give some introduction to this problem and introduce various classical tools to deal with this question, with, first, a focus on dimension 3. Then I will explain how thermodynamical ideas can help giving a new proof of a recent result by Danciger and Zhang : Surface groups whose linear part is Hitchin do not act properly on the affine space.
