What To Do Once You Have The Job

Abstract:

We conventionally think of an academic job as consisting of research, teaching, and service.  Grad school and postdocs teach research, and maybe some teaching if you’re lucky.  In addition to service, there’s also a major share of “other.”  What do you need to know that you didn’t learn in grad school?  How do you navigate the world of institutional committees and professional societies?  How do you recruit and advise math majors?  How do you form a professional identity in your department, institution, and profession?  And how do you get tenure doing that?
