Abstract: A 2014 study in PNAS reviewed a long history of scholarship in teaching and proclaimed that if the contest between active learning and pure lectures were a clinical trial in medicine, it would long since have been stopped for benefit.  So what should we be doing with our classes?  How do we teach students to value mathematics?  How can we make them enthusiastic participants in our goal that they master certain mathematical content?
