I will survey various advances pertaining to the existence, (non-)uniqueness and Morse-theoretic study of (codimension 1) minimal submanifolds in space forms, specifically in round spheres and in Euclidean balls (the latter of course for the free boundary problem). Special emphasis will be placed on (sometimes unexpected) broken symmetries, either resulting from the comparison of such settings or imputable to dimensional phenomena.
