Abstract/Media

In this talk I will highlight some of the number theoretic features of SnapPy, including computations of the various number fields associated with a Kleinian group. Then I will discuss an explicit application of these features to a concrete geometric problem, with the goal of modeling how SnapPy can be used in "real life." Specifically, I will show how to make standard constructions in Bass-Serre theory explicit in order to find an arithmetically interesting essential surface in certain 3-manifolds.
