Globe West People:
Several Massachusetts students have been selected to the eight-person team that will represent the United States in the ninth annual China Girls Mathematical Olympiad, taking place tomorrow through Friday in Shijiazhuang, China.

The team, sponsored by the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute in Berkeley, Calif., includes Lexington resident Elizabeth Synge, a silver medalist last year who will be a senior at Boston University Academy; Stoneham resident Andi Wang, who is entering Massachusetts Institute of Technology as a freshman; and Jae Eui Shin of Andover, a senior at Phillips Academy in Andover.

The team’s coach is Zuming Feng, a math teacher at New Hampshire’s Phillips Exeter Academy (which is also supplying two team members), as well as leader of the USA International Mathematical Olympiad team, and director of the Mathematical Olympiad’s summer program.

The competition consists of a rigorous test involving eight math problems that must be solved within eight hours over a two-day period. The students will post updates about their experiences on the research institute’s website, www.msri.org.
