UC Berkeley hosts free youth math festival Sunday

As many as 600 sixth- through 12th-grade students can experience hands-on learning at UC Berkeley's free math event Sunday.
At the Julia Robinson Mathematics Festival, professors and instructors will help participants test their skills with puzzles, games and other activities.
Berkeley professor Michael Hutchings will speak on "The Mathematics of Rubik's Cube." Event organizers will also reward students' creativity and persistence with raffle tickets for prizes.
The festival is named after the late Julia Robinson, a UC Berkeley mathematics professor and 1983 MacArthur Fellow who made key contributions to the mathematics field.
Participants can choose a morning session that runs from 8:45 a.m. to 1:15 p.m., or a 12:15 p.m. to 4:30 p.m. afternoon session.
The festival will be held on the UC Berkeley campus at the MLK Jr. Student Union inside the Pauley Ballroom.
