Description
Speakers Doug Bates (U Wisconsin) Di Cook (Iowa State) Mark Hansen (UCLA) Jennifer Hoeting (Colorado State) Thomas Lumley (U Washington) Deborah Nolan (UCB) Duncan Temple Lang (UCD) Lee Wilkinson (SPSS) This workshop is intended to bring together educators interested in expanding the role of computing in the entire statistical sciences curricula. The goal is to discuss how we can introduce new courses in computing and integrate computing into traditional classes in our curricula in order to train undergraduates to be better prepared for modern data analysis. The workshop will be organized to have sessions discussing: General area of computation in the curricula, including definitions, broad topics, difficulties, challenges, and opportunities Data Technologies Computing Environments and Programming Languages Visualization Statistical/Numerical Algorithms The result of workshop will be a document that discusses the reasons for improving the level of computational instruction and identifies important aspects and alternative configurations of syllabi to create different curricula for various types of institutions. The report is aimed at providing material for others to advocate such changes in their institutions. Additionally, we want to identify practical ways to aid the introduction of such classes and curricular changes, e.g. provide training and teaching material for existing faculty. For more information please visit http://www.stat.berkeley.edu/~statcur. Those interested in attending should contact the organizers at statcur - AT - stat.berkeley.edu. Funding The workshop is funded in part by NSF grant DUE 0618865. Limited funding for attendees may be available. Please contact the organizers. A block of rooms has been reserved at the Hotel Durant. Please mention the workshop name and reference the following code when making reservations via phone, fax or e-mail: TM0000. The cut-off date for reservations is April 5, 2007. A block of rooms has been reserved at the Rose Garden Inn. Reservations may be made by calling 1-800-992-9005 OR directly on their website. Click on Corporate at the bottom of the screen and when prompted enter code MATH (this code is not case sensitive). By using this code a new calendar will appear and will show MSRI rate on all room types available. The following Group Code should be entered in the "Comment" field when booking through our Website. Group Code = CGMS49. Please note: The Original Queen room type does not have an in-room T1 connection, but we do have WIFI available in our main lobby area. The cut-off date for reservations is April 13, 2007.
