The aim of this workshop is to introduce advanced graduate students and postdocs to tropical geometry. Various aspects of this multi-faceted field will be highlighted in two short-courses comprising lectures and exercise/discussion sessions as well as in research talks. The workshop will thus provide the participants with an excellent introduction to the forthcoming events of the program. There will be two short-courses given by Hannah Markwig (U Goettingen) Federico Ardila (SFSU) Additional research lectures will be held by Marianne Akian (INRIA, Saclay - Ile de France) Lucia Lopez de Medrano (UNAM) Annette Werner (U Frankfurt) Lauren Williams (Harvard, MSRI) Jospehine Yu (MIT, MSRI) among others. We plan for a session of (very) short contributions by participants, consisting of focused two to three slides each. This will be an important activity of the workshop, so we encourage participants of all levels to send an abstract to the organizers by email along with completing the registration. The scientific part will be complemented by a round table discussion on career issues of female mathematicians. Confirmed panelists are: Helene Barcelo (MSRI), Diane Maclagan (Warwick), Lauren Williams (Harvard, MSRI), Josephine Yu (MIT, MSRI), and Angelica Cueto (UC Berkeley). Female researchers are particularly encouraged to attend this workshop and will be given priority for support of travel and lodging expenses.
