Abstract We introduce new geometric evolution equations for hypersurfaces in asymptotically flat Riemannian manifolds, and discuss a natural application of these null mean curvature flows to locating marginally outer trapped surfaces (MOTS) - which play the role of quasi-local black hole boundaries in general relativity
