Description

Lecture notes and homework problems are available at https://github.com/semorrison/msri-791/

Subfactor theory is a subject from operator algebras, with many surprising connections to other areas of mathematics. This summer school will be devoted to understanding the representation theory of subfactors, with a particular emphasis on connections to quantum symmetries, fusion categories, planar algebras, and random matrices.

Suggested prerequisites:

  • Knot theory (e.g. "The Knot Book", by Adams)
  • Functional analysis (e.g. Hilbert spaces, some version of the spectral theorem, as in Stein and Shakarchi vol. 3 or the first three chapters of Conway's "A course in functional analysis")
  • Representation theory of finite groups (e.g. character tables, as in the first third of Serre's "Linear Representations of Finite Groups" or the first chapter of Fulton and Harris "Representation theory")

For eligibility and how to apply, see the Summer Graduate Schools homepage
