Description
LOCATION: The Banff Conference Centre, Banff, Canada This small workshop for about fifteen participants is designed to allow a more leisurely introduction to the background material of the von Neumann symposium for the benefit of graduate students and postdoctoral mathematicians who are interested in attending the symposium (at MSRI in Berkeley, Aug. 11-20, 2003). Participants should have some familiarity with the basics of calculus on manifolds (differential forms, Stokes' Theorem, de Rham cohomology) and have taken at least an introduction to Riemannian geometry. Topics to be covered include an introduction to minimal submanifolds and calibrations, holonomy, examples, fiber bundles and connections, and symplectic geometry. In addition, reading material will be recommended for further preparation for the Von Neumann Symposium. Local lodging and possibly some additional funding will be available to those selected to participate. Applications will be considered on a space-available basis. REGISTRATION CLOSED AS OF MARCH 1, 2003
