Math & Cultural [External Event] Theoretically Speaking Series feat. Jordan Ellenberg - "What Does Machine Learning Have to Offer Mathematics?"
Theoretically Speaking is a lecture series highlighting exciting advances in theoretical computer science for a broad general audience. Events are free and open to the public, with first-come, first-served seating.
The interaction of machine learning with math has attracted a lot of attention, because mathematics is in some respects a closed world with well-defined rules (like chess, and unlike poetry-writing) but also a domain where success is ultimately judged by human assessments of ingenuity and importance, not rigid criteria (like poetry-writing, and unlike chess). Can machines prove theorems? Can they have mathematical ideas? Jordan Ellenberg will talk about his joint work with researchers from DeepMind, which used novel techniques in machine learning to make progress in a problem in combinatorics, and will try to chart some near-term ways that machine learning may affect mathematical practice.
Jordan Ellenberg is a professor of mathematics at the University of Wisconsin–Madison specializing in number theory and arithmetic geometry, with additional interests in combinatorics, topology, and applications of machine learning to pure math. He is also the author of two general-audience books on mathematics, How Not to Be Wrong and Shape, as well as many articles in newspapers and magazines.
Light refreshments will be provided before the talk, starting at 5 p.m.

Special Events Symposium in Honor of Julia Robinson’s 100th Birthday
A Symposium on the occasion of Julia Robinson’s 100th birthday will be held on Monday December 9, 2019 at MSRI. Julia Robinson (1919-1985) was a leading mathematical logician of the twentieth century, and notably a first in many ways, including the first woman president of the American Mathematical Society and the first woman mathematician elected to membership in the National Academy of Sciences. Her most famous work, together with Martin Davis and Hilary Putnam, led to Yuri Matiyasevich's solution in the negative of Hilbert’s Tenth Problem, showing that there is no general algorithmic solution for Diophantine equations. She contributed in other topics as well. Her 1948 thesis linked the undecidability of the field of rational numbers to Godel’s proof of undecidability of the ring of integers. Confirmed participants in this day-long celebration of her work and of current mathematics insprired by her research include: Lenore Blum, who will give a public lecture, Lou van den Dries, Martin Davis, Kirsten Eisentrager, and (provisionally) Yuri Matiyasevich.

Special Events Why voting procedures can create a mess: A mathematician looks at elections
MSRI would like to invite you to a free public lecture on Wednesday, November 29th at 7:30 pm at Sibley Auditorium of the Bechtel Engineering Center on the UC Berkeley Campus.
ABSTRACT:Was this year's Presidential election mess really due to bad chad, poorly designed ballots, -- or subtle flaws of our election procedure?
This is not a new concern; in 1770 the French Mathematician J.C. Borda warned that the plurality vote -- the procedure currently used in the US -- can cause distorted election outcomes. He suggested an alternative to more accurately reflect the voters' wishes. But does it? And if not, can one design an optimal voting procedure?
These turn out to be questions that require a mathematical analysis, and that analysis reveals some unexpected and paradoxical results. This talk, geared to a general audience, will describe some of the insights that one can attain, and the lessons we can apply to preventfuture elections from falling into the electoral morass of Y2K.Updated on May 17, 2013 10:47 AM PDT -
